  • The Medieval Experience at Muncaster Castle, Cumbria

It’s all to play for at Muncaster Castle’s Medieval Experience, where history really does become hands-on. Unleash your inner knight as you challenge yourself in archery, crossbow shooting and axe-throwing under the guidance of an experienced weapons master. Your action-packed day also includes a falconry experience, where you’ll fly an owl yourself, and a visit to the Cumbrian castle’s state rooms.

  • Ghost hunting at Chillingham Castle, Northumberland

Dare to brave one of England’s spookiest strongholds? Join a ghost hunt at Chillingham Castle for your chance to rub shoulders with the spectres. You might be lucky enough to spot the White Pantry Ghost or hear the ‘voices in the chapel’. There are even special tours for families, so even the youngest ghostbusters can join in the fun.

  • Warwick Castle’s Viking Raiders, Warwickshire

Warwick Castle’s brand-new summer show will have you on the edge of your seat as the era of Vikings and Saxons comes to life in a fast-and-furious stunt show. Think epic fight scenes, jaw-dropping horsepower and amazing costumes as Æthelflæd takes on the Vikings. Whose side will you choose?

  • World War Two Weekend at Dover Castle, Kent

This Norman Castle is turning the clock back for its World War Two Weekend (20 – 21 June 2026). Enjoy re-enactments, daring performances from military motorcyclists and cooking demonstrations. Young visitors will love the assault course.

  • Carew Castle’s Giant Trebuchet, Pembrokeshire

Witness a feat of medieval engineering in action at the launch of Carew Castle’s Giant Trebuchet, on Tuesdays between 21 July and 25 August 2026. Plus, don’t miss the Grand Medieval Joust (4–5 July 2026), where you can cheer on the knights and horses in a nail-biting battle.

  • Pirate Weekend at Conwy Castle, Conwy

Fun ahoy! Pirate Weekend is a summer highlight in the walled Welsh town of Conwy, and Conwy Castle joins in the fun with its very own pirates camping out in the castle from 13 – 14 June 2026. You’ll get a king’s-eye view of the pirate ships from the castle turrets, plus there’ll be a pirate parade, themed market, games and music to enjoy at the marina.

  • Jousting at Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfries

Caerlaverock Castle’s annual jousting tournament (25 – 26 July 2026) is your ticket to medieval Scotland. Admire the plucky knights as they charge into battle, explore the colourful encampments and listen to medieval music.

  • Evening garden tours at Richmond Castle, North Yorkshire

Another of Britain’s Norman castles, Richmond Castle is running after-hours tours of its garden this June. You’ll have the chance to meet the head gardener and their team too, and ask questions about the gardens as you wander round.

Behind the scenes in Britain this summer

Britain promises to be the star of this summer’s blockbusters, with cameos in a reel of top films and TV shows in 2026.

Set to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Glasgow is no stranger to the superhero world, having previously appeared in 2022’s The Batman. Star Tom Holland was spotted filming in the city centre, which doubles for New York. Follow Spidey’s web to Merchant City, one of Glasgow’s oldest districts, for independent shopping, a thriving coffee shop scene and eye-catching street art. Elsewhere in Scotland, rumour has it that Supergirl was filmed in the rugged Highlands, while The Odyssey puts the country’s Moray Firth coast in the spotlight.

Look out for Britain on the small screen this summer, too, as House of the Dragon’s third season returns to Snowdonia (Eryri). Live your own Welsh fantasy in this picturesque National Park with dreamy steam train adventures, epic hikes and – for the brave – the world’s fastest zipline.

In London’s Richmond upon Thames, everyone’s favourite moustachioed football manager is back for Ted Lasso season four. Take The Original Ted Lasso Tour for the inside scoop on filming from a loyal ‘Tedhead’, ending at Ted’s pub.

Summer in Britain: Your questions answered

  • Britain is a delight to explore in summer. It’s a great time to explore our coasts: discover the Victorian seaside resorts of Lancashire, enjoy golf and watersports in East Lothian and Angus, or discover Liverpool’s maritime heritage. Other beautiful areas to visit at this time of year include Northumberland, Cumbria, Aberdeenshire and Cardiff.

  • The fine weather in Britain in summer makes it a great season for exploring the outdoors. There are lots of fun summer holiday activities for families in the UK. Why not try your hand at a new watersport, like diving in Devon or surfing in northern Scotland? Or, try rockpooling and crabbing at our lesser-known beaches – you never know what you might catch.

Summer is also a good time to visit Britain’s castles, as they put on lots of family-friendly events in the warmer months. Watch the impressive jousting at Warwick Castle, or give archery a go at Hever Castle.

  • Even on a budget, there is heaps to do in Britain in summer. Our museums and art galleries often run free exhibitions, and look out for hands-on activities for children during the school holidays.

For free outdoors adventures, Britain is criss-crossed with footpaths to explore and our National Parks are free to visit.

  • Britain’s National Landscapes (formerly known as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty) are a treat in the summer months. The Quantock Hills in Somerset were England’s first National Landscape – think purple heathlands and coastal views, ripe for exploring on foot, bike or horseback. Explore more of Britain’s National Landscapes to discover some of our nations’ most scenic spots.
